Introduction: Definitions, classification, fundamental principles, fullerences, nanoparticles, nanoclusters, nanowires, nanotubes, nanolayers, nanopores, supramolecules. Properties: Size dependence of properties such as electrical, physical, optical and chemical. Synthesis: Top-down and bottom-up approaches, plasma arcing, chemical vapor deposition, electrodeposition, sol-gel synthesis, high energy milling/ball milling, nanolithography, self assembly, Langmuir-Blodgett films. Characterization: Scanning tunneling microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. Application: Nanomachines and nanodevices, impact of nanomaterials in the areas of materials manufacturing, health care,data storage, clean energy etc. Society and nanotechnology: Challenges and fears, impact on health and environment.
