Course Name:

Materials Laboratory (MT705)

Programme:

M.Tech. in Materials Engineering

Semester:

First

Category:

Programme Core (PC)

Credits (L-T-P):

(0-0-3) 2

Course Outcomes:

CO1: Generate phase diagram using cooling curves.
CO2: Prepare metallic specimens for metallographic studies, operate optical microscope and identify microstructure of metallic samples.
CO3: Apply the fundamentals of physical metallurgy, phase diagrams, materials characterization, and mechanical behaviour of materials to understand the stability of microstructures, hardenability, and diffusion related experiments.
CO4: Acquire functional understanding of X-Ray diffractometer and Scanning and Transmission Electron microscopes (SEM and TEM) through operational demonstration using operating principles of the respective equipment.
CO5: Experimental know-how on hardness, tensile, impact and creep testing based on the theoretical understanding of mechanical behaviour of materials.

Course modules and teaching hours:

Module 1: Experiment of Pb-Zn alloy for phase diagram generation by cooling curves (3 hours)
Module 2: Metallography, study of optical microscope, specimen preparation for metallography, etching technique, image analysis, microstructural study of Steel, Cast Iron, Copper, and Aluminum, Diffusion experiment of Zn in Cu and Jominy end quench test for hardenability in high carbon steel (21 hours)
Module 3: Demonstration of X-ray diffractometer, SEM, and TEM (6 hours)
Module 4: Hardness, tensile, impact, and creep testing (6 hours)
