Course Outcomes: 

CO1: Students would be able to think, analyse and solve engineering problems
CO2: To be able to calculate stresses and strains in axially-loaded members, circular torsion members, and members subject to flexural loadings
CO3: To determine and illustrate principal stresses, maximum shearing stress, and the stresses acting on a structural member
CO4: To analyze and design thin, thick cylinders and springs
CO5: Students would be able to analyse failure phenomenon & judge about the results and its accuracy

Course modules and teaching hours: 

Module 1: (14 hours)
Stresses in homogeneous beams, bending theory, flexural formula, flexural rigidity, variation of shear stress across section. Deflection of beams, relation between deflection, slope and bending moment. Determine the deflection of statically determinate beams using methods of double integration and Macaulay’s Method

Module 2: (15 hours)
Torsion of shafts, derivation of torsion equation for circular shaft, strength and stiffness of solid and hollow circular shafts, Transmission of power. Strain energy concept, stresses due to gradually applied, suddenly applied and impact load, Strain energy due to flexural and torsion. Principle stress for two dimensional stress system, Mohr’s circle of stress

Module 3: (13 hours)
Springs: bending and torsion springs, beam of uniform strength, spring constants for Leaf spring and closely coiled helical spring under axial loads. Design of pressure vessels, stresses in thin cylinders’ volume change, Lame’s equation for thick cylinders. Elastic stability of columns, axially loaded short column, Euler’s theory for slender column and Rankine’s formula for intermediate columns. Elementary concept of theories of failure
