Course Outcomes: 

CO1: To understand the in-depth fundamental knowledge of primary and secondary steelmaking processes, with relevance to modern industry
CO2: To perform basic calculations like mass and energy balance relating to production of steel, taking into consideration the thermodynamic limitations and kinetics and gathering inter-relationship between various technical processes
CO3: To know details about several aspects involved in production of steel like refractories, carbon footprint and India’s role in steelmaking
CO4: To identify and choose a production methodology for a particular type of steel from given raw materials and set of conditions by applying theoretical knowledge and technological principles

Course modules and teaching hours: 

Module 1: (10 hours): STEELMAKING FUNDAMENTALS
Introduction, modern steel-making, science base of steelmaking, slag in steelmaking, physico-chemical properties of slag, steelmaking reactions, refractory materials in steelmaking

Module 2: (10 hours): MODERN STEELMAKING PRACTICE
Converter steelmaking practice and combined blowing, modern trends in BOF steelmaking, Electric furnace steelmaking (Developments, alternative charge materials), stainless steelmaking, process control in BOF steelmaking, automation

Module 3: (10 hours): LADLE METALLURGY
Evolution of ladle treatment and requirements, synthetic slag practice, injection ladle metallurgy, principles of de-oxidation, degassing, clean steel, inclusion engineering, exercises in ladle metallurgy

Module 4: (12 hours): SOLIDIFICATION, CASTING AND FINISHING OPERATIONS
Principles of solidification of steel, ingot casting, continuous casting, final finishing operations, heat treatment, deformation processing, modeling of steelmaking process, illustration of physical modeling, status of steelmaking in India, exercises
