CO1 Explain purpose of heat treatment in steels and difference in plain carbon and alloy steels
CO2 Understand Fe-Fe3C system and its various reactions and phase transformation
CO3 Acquire knowledge about TTT and CCT diagrams and various heat treatment, thermomechanical treatment and surface hardening processes in steels Correlating the fundamentals of phase transformation to heat treatment of steels and final properties
CO4 Attain knowhow on various alloy steels and cast iron alongside their application
Course modules and teaching hours:
Module 1: (8 hours)
Introduction to heat treatment and its process variables, nature of alloys, Iron and its solid solutions, intermediate phases, types of phase diagrams
Module 2: (10 hours)
Iron - carbon equilibrium diagram, plain carbon steel vs alloys steels, influence of alloying elements in Fe-C alloys, formation of austenite, pearlite martensite, bainite reaction
Module 3: (15 hours)
TTT diagrams, CCT diagrams, heat treatment of steel, tempering of martensite, martempering, austempering, thermomechanical treatment and surface hardening and strengthening mechanisms
Module 4: (9 hours)
Low alloy steels, stainless steels, tool steels, embrittlement and fracture of steels, cast irons: characteristics, applications
