Module 1: Introduction (6 hours)
Definitions; classification; fundamental principles; fullerenes; nanoparticles; nanoclusters; nanowires; nanotubes; nanolayers; nanopores; supramolecules
Module 2: Synthesis (12 hours)
Top-down and bottom-up approaches; Plasma arcing; Chemical vapor deposition; Electro-deposition; Sol-gel synthesis; High energy ball milling; Nanolithography; Self-assembly; Langmuir-Blodgett films; Electrospinning
Module 3: Properties (8 hours)
Size dependence of properties, such as: Electrical, Physical, Optical, Chemical.
Module 4: Characterization (8 hours)
Particle size and surface area determination; Spectroscopy: IR and Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy; Microscopy: scanning tunneling microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy
Module 5: Applications (6 hours)
Nanomachines and nanodevices; Nanocomposites: MMC, CMC and PMC; Impact of nanomaterials in the areas of materials manufacturing, health care, data storage, clean energy, etc.
Module 6: Society and nanotechnology (2 hours)
Challenges and fears; Impact on health and environment
