Course Outcomes:
CO1: The students should be able to understand the engineering and scientific reasons behind identifying the right surface engineering method among number of processes
CO2: The students should understand and appreciate the practical difficulties in surface engineering methods, hence he/she should know technological aspects of coatings
CO3: The students should understand the metallurgical changes occurring during a coating or a surface modification technique to improve a technique and hence finally appreciate the life of coatings
Course modules and teaching hours:
Module 1 (15 hours): Introduction: Solid-gas interfaces, Surface and bulk: structure and properties. Interfaces, roughness, residual stress, interface, adsorption- chemisorption and physical. surface energy, surface tension, Gibbs- Wulff's theory, Wulff's plot for simple systems. Solid-liquid interfaces, Liquid-gas interfaces, Liquid-liquid interfaces, surfactants, emulsifiers, dispersants, frothing agents. Hertzian theory, Hardness of surfaces and coatings
Module 2 (10 hours): Diffusion coatings, overlays, depositions, mechanical coatings, anodization: suitability of coatings, failure of coatings, life of coatings, adhesion, residual stress in coatings, failure of coatings: Soft coatings on hard substrates, hard materials on soft substrates, Strain-incompatibility, thermal stresses, growth stresses
Module 3 (10 hours): Technological aspects coatings. Diffusion coatings: carburizing, nitriding, plasma nitriding, carbo-nitriding, pack-aluminizing, platinizing. Dip coatings: Galvanizing and tinning. polymeric coatings, spin and extrusion techniques, laser surface treatments, electron. beam surface treatments, Induction hardening, flame hardening, PVD and CVD, electrodeposition, electroless deposition, thermal spray techniques, detonation and cold spray techniques, weld-building, glazing, mechanical treatments
Module 4 (5 hours): Functional Coatings: Coatings anti-biofouling, wear resistance, low-friction, erosion resistance, corrosion resistance, scratch resistance, primers, fatigue life improvements, thermal barrier coatings, Oxidation resistance, diffusion barrier coatings, environmental barrier coatings, optical coatings etc
