Course Outcomes:
CO1: To study the evolution of measurement and instrumentation, classification, standards used, calibration, uncertainty, tolerance and relate their usage in different measurement systems
CO2: To identify malfunctions in measurements and instrumentation, identify components from an instrumentation drawing chart so as to develop problem solving skills required by a professional
CO3: To study working principles of strain, acceleration, temperature, pressure, flow velocity, torque, humidity measuring devices and to have an understanding of their instrumentation concepts that can be applied to control systems
CO4: To be able to apply softwares like LABVIEW and MATLAB for measuring given set of parameters like pressure, flow velocity and to design a system or process by analyzing its performance and working characteristics to meet the desired needs using given tools
Course modules and teaching hours:
Module 1: (10 hours): Measurement and instrument characteristics
Introduction, Measurement, Instrument, Measurement methods, Generalized measurement system and its functional elements, Classification of instruments, Basic standards and units, Static terms and characteristics, Dynamic terms and characteristics, standard test-inputs, Zero, first and second order instruments, First order system responses, Second order system responses
Module 2: (10 hours): Errors, Statistical analysis, Pressure and flow measurement
Classification of errors, Statistical analysis of test data, Curve fitting by least squares, selecting an instrument, Pressure units and measuring instruments, Nature of flow, Classification of fluid flow measurement techniques, Variable head-meters, Pitot tubes, Variable area flow meters, Quantity meters
Module 3: (12 hours): Temperature, strain measurement
Temperature scales, Temperature measuring instruments, Liquid-in-glass thermometers, Bimetallic thermometers, Filled-system thermometers, Thermocouples, Resistance thermometers and thermistors, Radiation and optical pyrometers, Pyrometric cones, crayons, paints and pellets. Strain measuring techniques, Requirements of a strain gauge, Resistance strain gauge, Stain gauge alloys and materials, Metal resistance strain gauges, Unbonded versus bonded gauges
Module 4: (10 hours): Force, torque, miscellaneous measurements. Control systems
Force measurement, Torque measurement, Density and specific gravity, Liquid level, Viscosity, Examples of control systems, Classification of control systems, Control systems terminology, Servomechanism, process control and regulators, Manual and automatic control systems
