Course Outcomes: 

CO1: To be able to comprehend the underlying principles of advanced characterization techniques i.e. is material - stimuli interaction
CO2: To interpret the data from materials characterization techniques
CO3: To be able to identify appropriate methods for specific application and interpret analytical data to obtain quantitative results

Course modules and teaching hours: 

Module 1: Spectroanalytical methods (10)
Introduction, IR spectroscopy, Raman Spectroscopy, atomic absorption spectrometry

Module 2: Thermal analysis (10)
Thermogravimetry, differential thermal analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, temperature modulated DSC, dynamic mechanical thermal analysis, hyphenated techniques

Module 3: Surface characterization techniques (10)
X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy, atomic force microscopy, comparison between electron microscopy and scanning probe microscopy, sample preparation techniques for electron microscopy.

Case studies and experimental demonstration will be used in addition to the theoretical concepts.
