Semester:

Second

Category:

Elective Courses (Ele)

Credits (L-T-P):

(3-0-0) 3

Course Outcomes:

CO1: To introduce fracture of materials and linear elastic fracture mechanics
CO2: To introduce fractography and fracture signature identification
CO3: To present case studies of Engineering Failure Analysis
CO4: To provide an insight into solving real-life engineering problems in fracture/failure

Course modules and teaching hours:

Module 1: Introduction to Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics (LEFM)
Historical perspective of Fracture Mechanics; contributions of Kirsch, Inglis, Irwin, Orowan, Paris,
Griffith, Paris, and James Rise. Conventional Design Concepts vs. Fracture Mechanics based concept,
Structural Design; Factor of Safety vs. Stress Concentration Factor (K t ) vs. Stress Intensity Factor (K),
Difference between Toughness, Impact-Toughness, and Fracture Toughness,
Stress concentration around a circular-hole in a large thin plate. Stress concentration around an
elliptical-hole and a flat elliptical-hole in a large thin plate, Stress Intensity ahead of a crack-tip;
Critical Stress Intensity Factor (K IC ), Numerical problem solving
Module 2: Introduction to Fractography, Fracture Signature Identification; ductile & brittle fractures
in, tension, compression, and torsion. Fracture signatures of fatigue, creep and mixed mode failures.
Module 3: Introduction to Metallurgical Failure and Root-Cause Analysis, Case-Studies of
Failure Analysis; Failure of engineering structures used in: railways, port, power generation stations,
chemical plants, oil & natural gas industry, etc.
